The Protected
Landscape Malpais
Grande is
one of the wildest areas of Fuerteventuraand
arid,
but a great interest and
as a geological landscape of
the island.
The so-called "badlands"
(a
"field of
lava")
is a typical geomorphological element
around volcanoes
that have erupted with lava "thick" (rich
in silica),
which did
not flowlike typical Hawaiian volcanoes (lava quick
and not sticky)
and the flow
slowly because
of its density,
the upper zone of
the melt is cooled
and fragmented,
giving rise to a sharp
cutting rock.
This protected
landscape covers
an area of
3,250 ha
and is
located in
the municipalities of Antigua
and Tuineje.
It also has
the status of Special
Protection Area for
Birds. The
vegetation of this area
is exclusively composed of
lichens.
In this "field of
lava" include three
buildings that
drove these
peculiar volcanic lavas (from
north to
south): Caldera de
la Laguna, with
almost 300 meters
high and consists
of lapillithat were
exploited until
recently, the
Caldera de Liria, of approximately
215 meters
and also industrially
exploited, and the Arrabales Caldera, 244
meters high
and completely
unspoilt.
The best way to visit
this area is
to leave from Tiscamanita and
follow a road
leading directly to the Caldera de
la Laguna,
where we can go
to the
other two boilers. Another
way to reach
this area is
from the Fv-2 road,
which passes a
few meters from the Caldera of
Arrabales
